Newrybar Merchants are thrilled to welcome renowned Sydney based painter and sculptor Sylvia McEwan, to our Pop-Up Artist space on Thursday November 1st with an opening night from 5-7pm.
Sylvia will exhibit her latest works in Making A Mark, an exclusive collection of paintings on canvas and paper that reflect her intuitive flair for applying layers of colour and texture in exquisite ways. Drawing on references as diverse as Classicism and Cubism, her work shifts between the figurative and the abstract.
“Inspiration comes from working each day. Focusing on the painting process, finding new ways of mark making. Over time there are small breakthroughs that enable me to move forward and occasionally something wonderful happens. That makes it all worthwhile and I can’t wait to capture that moment in the next painting.”
“Whilst the subject matter is important, the true subject is always space, form, structure and balance.”
Sylvia's artistic development has been fuelled by the love for the New York School of Abstract Expressionists and in particular William De Kooning's strong figurative work. Always using the subject matter as the starting point, Sylvia carves the form within the painting to reveal a cubist interpretation.
Since 1996, Sylvia has had nineteen solo exhibitions throughout Australia, USA and UK. Her works hang in public and private galleries around the world including Pryor Fine Art in Atlanta and Koskela Sydney, and her painting 'Whistlers Mother' was selected as a finalist in the Sulman Prize 2003.
Making a Mark by Sylvia McEwan will exhibit at Newrybar Merchants from November 1 – 29.
